The Mother of One Recluse was the work of Chinese film director Yang Shu. She made the film five years ago, and in doing so offended the Chinese government. Since then she has been forced to remain in exile in Hong Kong. Her mother who lives in Sichuan has had a relapse of her stomach cancer from years ago, and needs to undergo an operation imminently. She wishes to see her daughter and grandson, having only known the latter via internet chat. Therefore, Yang Shu takes the opportunity of a film festival event to go with her husband and son to Taiwan to meet her mother, whom they have arranged to meet when the latter is there on a mainland company leisure tour. To ensure this family reunion can take place under the strict control of regulated schedule by the Chinese tour company, the young family checks in to the same hotel, and follows the tour group to the various scenic spots they visit.

導演應亮的自傳式電影，多數畫面在高雄拍攝。

五年前，因拍攝《孤僻者的母親》，楊樞導演遭中國政府處罰，滯留香港，至今無法回國。住在四川的媽媽雖多年前胃癌手術成功，但近期復發，很快要再動手術，因此很想與女兒，及四年來只通過網絡「認識」的外孫見面。楊樞導演與香港丈夫帶著四歲的兒子藉參加電影節的機會，從流亡地香港到台灣，來實現這次家庭團聚。無奈媽媽不能脫離旅行團「自由行」，女婿訂了與媽媽相同的酒店、查好旅行團路線，協助全家在台灣的酒店和各風景區會面。

Director: Ying Liang

Ying Liang was born in Shanghai and graduated from the Department of Arts at Beijing Normal University and the Directing Department at Chongqing University Film Academy. In 2012, he adapted a social incident in Shanghai—the Yang Jia police assault case—into his fourth film, When Night Falls (《我還有話要說》), which was funded by the Jeonju International Film Festival in South Korea.

The Shanghai municipal government once offered an astronomical sum of 10 billion Korean won (approximately 270 million New Taiwan dollars) in an unsuccessful attempt to purchase the film’s rights from the Jeonju International Film Festival, which commissioned and owned the film.

When Night Falls premiered in the competition section of the Locarno Film Festival, where it won both the Best Director Award and Best Actress Award. However, the film was later banned by the Chinese government. Ying Liang was formally prosecuted by the Shanghai Public Security Bureau and would be arrested if he returned to China. As a result, Ying settled in Hong Kong under the title of artist-in-residence at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

應亮出生於上海市，北京師範大學藝術系與重慶大學電影學院導演系畢業。2012年改編上海社會事件楊佳襲警案，完成第四部電影作品《我還有話要說》，由韓國全州國際影展出資拍攝。上海市政府曾開出100億韓幣的天價（約合新台幣2.7億）意圖向本片委製與版權所有單位韓國全州影展購買本片版權未果。《我還有話要說》於盧卡諾影展競賽單元首映後獲得最佳導演獎與最佳女主角獎。該片隨後遭到中國政府查禁，應亮遭到上海市公安局正式起訴，待他回國即會被逮捕，因此應亮以香港演藝學院駐場藝術家的身份定居香港。
